Job Summary

The purpose of this role is to lead and run the Engineering, Technical and Maintenance Services functions within budget and to plan, thereby creating a state-of-the-art manufacturing plant at DePuy using best practice technologies and latest / breakthrough technologies.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Embed Quality First, Safety Always Culture

  • Work with Manager to develop and implement strategic engineering Goals & Objectives.

  • Support the implementation of all engineering and plant strategic initiatives.

  • Work as a strategic partner with all other departments to develop DePuy as a Best-in-Class orthopedics plant and a flagship company within J&J.

  • Provide leadership within the Engineering and Technical Services functions that will deliver superior business results in-line with objectives.

  • Ensure there is close collaboration between associates in Engineering, R&D, Production, Regulatory, Quality Assurance, Planning, Materials, etc. when introducing new products and / or making product changes.

  • Actively participate in / lead Joints Network Engineering and Technical Services initiatives.

Supply

  • Support day to day operations through attendance at Value Stream daily meetings and the timely closure of actions across the team.

  • Provide support to the team in Root Cause Analysis of supply and quality issues as they arise through tools such as 8D and Six Sigma.

  • Project Management - provide timely and accurate reporting on project activities ensuring projects are delivered to agreed timelines.

Cost

  • Management of the engineering budget for the areas of responsibility.

  • Manage the consumables budget through the execution of the activities committed to in the Business Plan meeting financial targets.

  • Lead a structured approach to scrap reduction within the value streams through data capture, analysis and problem-solving meeting commitments made in the Business Plan.

  • Provide updates to management on a weekly and monthly basis in relation to financial performance in the areas of scrap and consumables.

People

  • Provision of clearly defined responsibilities and objectives to team members

  • Definition and execution of individual performance improvement and development plans for team members in-line with the Plant strategic imperatives and objectives.

  • Provision of effective performance reviews in a timely manner

  • Provision of continuous support and mentoring to the team members.

  • Identification of training needs of staff and opportunities for development to maximize their potential.

  • Demonstrate strong leadership and a clear identifiable work ethos within the Engineering team.

  • Develop and maintain a Credo & Behavioural Standards based culture within the Engineering team.

Technical Operations – E2E Strategic

  • Develop Capital Investment requirements for the business that will drive cost improvement and increased capacity.

  • Support Capacity Increase projects to ensure design for manufacture / value.

  • Ensure the facility is maintained at a high level in terms of utilities, plant and equipment, replacing obsolete / inefficient plant and equipment where necessary.

  • Ensure all equipment / machines are maintained to factory standard and uptime is optimized.

  • Ensure all risks associated with the introduction of new equipment, products and or processes are mitigated.

  • Support the launch quantities and production ramp-up schedules for all NPI’s and product transfers.

  • Lead specific improvement initiatives to drive increased efficiency / reduced costs in the business

  • Support attainment of key business metrics through the provision of maintenance support for value stream processes.

  • Provide timely and accurate reporting on downtime, budget and projects as well as Root Cause Analysis and implementation of robust solutions to issues.

  • Manage the execution of the Preventative Maintenance program for the assigned value streams.

  • Management of the maintenance team to include resource planning, training and development opportunities

Qualifications

Experience and Education

Essential

  • Degree qualified in a relevant Engineering / Science discipline, with 8-10 years experience in a Maintenance/Operations/Engineering role within a large fast paced company.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to make effective decisions.

  • Demonstrated ability to understand technical issues and provide practical and cost-effective engineering solutions.

  • Previous people management experience.

Desirable

  • Previous exposure of working within the medical devices or Manufacturing industry.

  • Metal Materials or Foundry experience, ideally in Investment Casting.

  • Experience in 5 axis CNC machining including Siemens Unigraphics NX CAM programming.

  • Experience with Cleanlines or Packaging.

  • Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing experience.

  • Experience in regulated industry, FDA, ISO, etc.

  • Certification in Lean, Six Sigma, Statistical Engineering or Structured Problem Solving Techniques.

Required knowledge, skills, abilities, certification/licenses

  • Excellent communication, both written and verbal, with senior stakeholders and employees

  • Ability to coach and mentor others to succeed

  • Strong Process and Maintenance Engineering skills

  • Highly organized with great attention to detail

  • Actively participate in the development and implementation of the Company’s strategic imperatives / objectives.

  • Develop and implement the Make Asset Management functions strategic imperatives in-line with the Plant strategic imperatives / objectives.

  • Develop and implement a world-class Process Engineering and Maintenance Engineering organization.

  • Manage, develop and lead departmental staff in a manner that will facilitate employee development, identifying training needs, stretch assignments and opportunities for development.

  • Create and maintain an environment of Continuous Improvement, focusing on quality, cost reduction, equipment reliability, process development and supply.
