  • Job Summary

  • As a member of the perioperative healthcare team, the surgical technician provides technical assistance to surgeons and charge nurses in the operating room. The surgical technician supports the surgeon during the surgical procedure by providing instrumentation and assistance as well as being responsible for utilizing the surgical process (surgical counts, hand off communication, time-out process, setting up individual items and equipment for surgical procedures in collaboration with the RN. The surgical technician effectively interacts with other disciplines to coordinate the patient’s care while in the surgical environment. The surgical technician must demonstrate ability to implement a plan for specific surgical cases and is responsible with the RN circulating nurse for accurate counts and creating/maintaining sterile fields. The surgical technician must demonstrate self-direction and professionalism by identifying areas of needed skill development and participating in educational activities; using the expertise of the unit nursing staff and the supervisory staff in dealing with patient problems; participating in unit meetings; being reliable and accountable on scheduled work days. Serves as a liaison between other departments ensuring communication and accurate records are available. Adheres to practice in accordance with the Ephraim McDowell Health nursing Professional Practice Model. Performance that accomplishes patient and family centered care as central to practice and a foundation of caring, compassion, competence, communication, collaboration and teamwork. Responsible to participate in shared nursing leadership to accomplish positive outcomes, education, respect, dignity, and safety.   • Working Conditions, Hazards and Physical Effort

  • Works in a well lighted, ventilated and air conditioned area. Often exposed to unpleasant odors, sights, and sounds. Long periods of standing, walking, stooping, heavy lifting and bending are required. Risks exposure to disease, infection and physical strain, and assault. Risks exposure to blood, body fluids, tissue, radiation and anti-neoplastic agents. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. independently. May work all shifts, some weekends and overtime.

  • Minimum Qualifications or Equivalents

  • Education: Completion of an approved OR technician course. Ability to speak English.

  • Experience: Demonstrated competence in the clinical setting.

  • Licenses, Certifications, and/or Registrations

  • Completion of an approved OR technician course with certification. Basic Life Support certification (successful completion within three [3] months of employment).
